Round is a Myth

I’ve never heard anyone refer to themselves as a “round-peg”.  If “pegs” are mentioned, it’s always in reference to how we don’t fit and are simply the ever-present square-peg.

Whose idea were these pegs, anyway?Square Peg

Have you ever met a “round-peg”?

I have the distinct feeling that each and every one of us see ourselves as some sort of square-peg. And if that’s the case, what point does this metaphor serve?

What if, for the sake of argument, there aren’t necessarily any round holes in which to fit, but that there are a multitude of shapes and sizes into which we’ve not yet dared to fit?

I contend that, just like “the cake”, round-holes and round-pegs are a lie.

So, where do we go from here?

You probably saw this coming, but… be a trapezoid, if that’s what you are.  Be a shamrock, if that’s what you are.  Round doesn’t really exist, so there’s no need to try and be round.  Will the place where you “fit” be easy to find?  …probably not.  But it will be magical and exhilarating once you find it.

And I want you to repeat this mantra any time you start thinking that you are the wrong-shaped-peg for the round-hole you’re supposed to fit into: round is a myth. <Repeat as necessary. Add a tune or a dance if you need to.>

Now, it may take yeeeeaaaarrrrssss to find your “right fit”, but holycow, you won’t be able to remember what life was like before you did.

Worth. Your. Time. And. Effort.

So, go forth, and find your shape.
